US ONE SHEET POSTER

Unfortunately, on this wonderful and underestimated Michael Mann’s work there are more shadows than certainties.

Due to a contention on the copyrights between Virgin and Paramount, so far Tangerine Dream’s complete and official work have not been released, even if a metropolitan legend goes that, a Virgin vinyl album had appeared  in shops and afterwards it was withdrawn from the market.(+).Therefore, I will not be long on the bootleg released by the little-known Blue Moon Records and on the semi-official and incomplete work, made by TDI, the group official record company which is, anyway, difficult to find and at a prohibitive price.

Many of the pieces included in these CDs do not come out in the film, others that are in the film have been omitted in the different editions or they are included but with an awfully bad sound quality, in detail:

  • The Main Title used in the film is an adaptation played by Tangerine Dream from Mea Culpa composed by Brian Eno and David Byrne and included in the album My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts .

  • The touching and poignant final music, when Glaeken (Scott Glenn) is swallowed up into the KEEP, is a Tangerine Dream’s electronic remake of Walking In The Air theme by The Snowman composed by Howard Blake. It exist an extended version 7 minutes longer.

  • The piece , played when Molasar shows itself to Dr. Cuza after having rescued Eva from rape, is an arrangement made by Tangerine Dream of Thomas Tallis’ work (1505-1585)”Gloria” “Puer Natus est Nobis”, from Mass For Four Vocies.

  • The first part of The Challenger’s Arrival, included in the TDI edition, is used only for a few seconds during the talk between Kaempfer and a healed Dr Cuza (Ian Mc Kellen).

Even if not recognised as a soundtrack, the only official material of the film is included in the album Logos – Live at Dominion London ’82 (Virgin). The Logos track consists of nearly 10 minutes of music used in the film and precisely during the “Nickel” cross removal and when Molasar reveals itself as in a sad play in a mirror, to SS Major Kaempfer (Gabriel Byrne).
